North Stars Rock! was an event put on by NSCC Student Leadership and Student Administrative Council honoring North "stars" who've had an impact on the respective lives of students, staff and faculty. MADA was contracted to film the event.

The video is mostly people (fans!) holding up signs with appreciation messages to their mentors and/or honorees. The only speaking part is the head of North Campus Security, the gorgeous Mr. Darryl Johnson, whom we all know and love, at the end of the video.
Another MADA production devoted to North Seattle Community College successfully rendered! Long live MADA!

KEYNOTE ADDRESS: MADA Kick-off Social Mixer
April 19, 2013
We live in an increasingly digital world. Rampant new technologies continue to invade our lives often making it difficult for us to discern any kind of distinction between the media channels through which we engage. This process is referred to as convergence and for many of us who have taken numerous media and communication courses here at North Seattle Community College, we know that the convergence of mass media with emerging technologies can be daunting to comprehend and navigate. The fragmentation of the value chain for industry specific mediums such as film, radio, theatre or journalism means that the manner in which content is created and distributed has changed dramatically from legacy systems to digital ones. Consumers are no longer tethered to the four walls of a movie theatre to watch a movie, the hard copy of a newspaper to read a breaking story, or the broadcast airwaves to produce audio content.  More and more consumers and content creators like independent filmmakers, podcasters, e-zine publishers and online journalists are establishing their own mechanisms for distributing media content.
It is not a perfect landscape; we are bombarded with new and improved mobile devices capable of functioning as alternative devices for viewing and distributing content, as well as ethical issues of copyright infringement. And we are told that we need to gravitate towards  social media and new emergent technologies in order to stay relevant in the marketplace as a brand. MADA understands the complexities of these issues, and the need for both critical analysis and media literacy when it comes to navigating the new digital landscape. But the most important thing the club can do is stay vigilant in helping its members acquire the competencies necessary to move forward in their interdisciplinary fields, by embracing the new digital landscape with hands-on production and applied knowledge of new technologies. And that is why MADA is dedicated to encouraging its members to produce original media content and to think about new methods of distribution to push content into the marketplace.
The extent to which the integration of digital and legacy media can coexist is a debate for another day but what I do know is that student-run media clubs like MADA are geared towards preparing for the next generation and navigation of the new frontier, and  are dedicated to honing skills for a future as media professionals.

MADA WELCOMES YOUR INTEREST IN THE CLUB banner

MADA WELCOMES YOUR INTEREST IN THE CLUB

LETTER FROM THE STUDENT CLUB PRESIDENT TO ALL PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS FROM NSCC SPRING CLUB FAIR 2013!

Welcome to the Media & Digital Arts Club or MADA; we sometimes refer more broadly to ourselves as the Multimedia Digital Arts Club but whatever you want to call us, know that essentially the mission of the club is to help other students create and participate in the development and distribution of original media content, and to promote media literacy.  “Students helping other students create Media” – this is the objective and it is measured by the various projects we undertake around the NSCC campus. Some of our past projects include the "Get to Know Your Faculty" series which offers students insight into some of the teaching professionals at the school by providing them a platform to introduce themselves to the greater student body, the "Student Organization Spotlight", a TV broadcast series that highlights some of the student run organizations on campus, and NSCC Springfest, a robust short film documentation of NSCC Spring's fun and enjoyment celebration and activities.

Current projects involve working with Student Leadership and the Research and Advocacy Board to produce a video addressing budgetary issues and student enrollment at NSCC to be sent to legislators in Olympia. Another new and exciting project is a news and informational TV broadcast series in development by one of our prominent members. More information about this series will be released at a later date.

Another important aspect of MADA is not only the value-added service of creating media properties that enrich the student environment, but that can also be reflected on your resume or curriculum vitae. Many of us in the club are using MADA as a foundation builder  towards our eventual careers in the media and technology industry. MADA offers the experience of hands-on production in multidisciplinary fields.

Our club adviser is Dr. Robert Schuessler, the Faculty Coordinator for the Communications, Business and Media program here at NSCC. MADA's origins are intrinsically linked to the CBM program but you do not have to be a part of said program to participate in the club. Your only requirement as a member is your willingness to get involved and participate in the process.

MADA is lead by my role as President of the Club along with my colleague LeKea DeBose, Vice-President and one of the original foundation members. Both LeKea and I are dedicated to ensure MADA's viability as a sustainable NSCC club. Our meetings are held on the NSCC campus on Fridays, 3-4pm in Rm. CC1360 (next to the microwave ovens in the cafeteria) NOTE: Meeting for 4-12-2013 has been cancelled.

So again, thank you for dropping by our table at the recent NSCC Spring Club Fair and we hope to see and work with you on an exciting project soon!

JOIN US TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

NSCC FILM SCREENINGS: In the first film screening we take a look at some of the visual artists of the Harlem Renaissance in Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance (Run time 60 mins.)Black artists struggle to have their art taken seriously by the white gatekeepers of the art world. Zora Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun (Run time 84 mins.) is a documentary about one of America's widely-published novelists and one of black America's notable scholars known as the "Queen of the Harlem Renaissance".

"THE CAPITAL OF BLACK AMERICA" - HARLEM IN THE 1920s and Early 1930s

Please join North Seattle Community College's Multimedia Digital Arts Club in honoring achievement in African-American History and US History with a double bill screening on Friday, February 22, 2013 4:30pm-7:00pm at the Baxter Event Center/NSCC campus, of important artists and innovators during the Harlem
Renaissance.

The Harlem Renaissance is one of the most influential, ambitious and
intellectually recognized famous cultural movements in America spanning the 1920's and early 30's. Harlem, a leading African-American neighborhood and cultural center in New York City was home to a flourishing period of expression by African-Americans in the arts, literature, film, politics, economics and music.

In the 1920's Harlem was euphemistically referred to as the "capital of Black America". Harlem was the cornerstone of  black culture because of a proliferation of freethinkers and creative individuals who settled in the area to work and produce great works of imagination and purpose. Harlem was the epicenter of some of the best and brightest minds of the 20th Century. Join Us to relive the history of this wonderful period in time.

NSCC HALLOWEEN CONTEST PHOTOS

Multimedia_Digital_Arts_Club's MADA_NSCC Halloween Photos 2012 album on Photobucket

No one can ever accuse NSCC students of not having a little fun when time permits between studies. Last year October 2012, MADA interviewed several creative NSCC students who got all gussied up in fancy dress to participate in the NSCC Halloween Photo Contest. Below are some of the photos from that interview. The actual video interviews are still in post-production and are expected to debut in early Winter Quarter 2013 around the end of January, or early February.

MADA member Baldwin Browne was instrumental as the on-camera host in the interviews and MADA member La-Tonia Denise Willis served as Director/Camera Operator.
